Collaboration with the UNDP “OCean ActIon Hub”

Since autumn 2018, Ocean. Now! has been volunteering for the “Ocean Action Hub” of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Goal of this collaboration is to build a global network of voluntary ocean action. As – only with a global movement – comes a real chance of an improvement of the health of the ocean.

We have been researching organisations on all levels of society – governmental, educational or NGOs – in Germany and Norway which have been involved in ocean protection so far. We reached out to them, followed-up and clarified questions. With this outreach, we are aiming at motivating members in organisations in our society to a concrete call-to-action:

register your voluntary commitment

This global registry with “The Ocean Conference” helps to accelerate ocean protection.

We are currently working on motivating more organisations, while a third “wave” is planned for the near future which will aim at communal action between the organisations.

A global system of voluntary commitments on ocean action is currently being discussed. Both the UN Ocean Conference process and the Our Ocean Conference series will continue to register voluntary commitments toward the next UN Ocean Conference planned for 2020 and the upcoming Our Ocean conferences in Norway (2019) and Palau (2020).

No water, no life. No blue, no green!

Sylvia Earle

One reason why we are teaming up with the Ocean Action Hub is that we feel strongly about a truly global effort in ocean protection. Our mission is aligned with the framework of the Paris Climate Agreement and the sub goal “Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water”.
