Campaign #1: Handover of open letter “microplastics in cosmetics and cleaning products”

Petition handover #2 in 2022

We delivered our petition to the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in February 2022 – 128,357 signatures thanks to you!

This time we handed over virtually. We talked to State Secretary Dr. Bettina Hoffmann and Ms. Gause, the Head of Unit for Chemicals, Risk Assessment and Risk Management from the BMUV. The conversation was good, extensive, inspiring. We thank the BMUV for its commitment to advancing progressive approaches in the REACH process with regard to a sustainable chemicals strategy.

At the same time, the conversation was sobering: we were able to hear that the progressive push in the German coalition agreement to ban liquid microplastics does not in any way mean that we could approach the same at the EU level. And once again we had to recognize: the billion-dollar cosmetics and chemical industry is lobbying heavily, while thousands and thousands of tons of plastic continue to be emitted into the ocean.

It is positive that Germany is showing presence and commitment across the EU, demanding that ingredients be tested for toxicity. But: we miss his approach to stand up for the precautionary principle above all and to stand up to the industry with this.

In our opinion, the burden of proof is on the side of industry. Whether the German government also sees it that way is currently up in the air. It is waiting for the EU Commission’s restriction proposal and will then see what happens. We are currently planning to make greater use of the support of industry. It is possible to work without dissolved polymers, we know that – and our brand partners have shown this for many years! Our plan is to prove this with a specific case study. Keep your fingers crossed, we are staying tuned!

A huge thank you goes to all our supporters, Campact and our alliance partners Sonett, Zero Waste e.V., Era Zero Waste, Clean clean, Unwaste, Planet Pure, Coscoon,  Annemarie Börling, und Gretel, i + m, Codecheck, Whale & Dolphin Conservation, Plasticontrol, and we are very happy to welcome now also Weleda as a partner.

Petition handover #1 in 2019

On June 19th, we successfully handed over  our Open Letter with about 90.000 signatures to the Minister of the Environment Svenja Schulze. We had a brief constructive discussion with the Minister of the Environment and her press spokesperson Stephan Haufe. We agreed to stay in contact. As you might guess we have not reached our goal yet. We are therefore motivating you to keep on sign our petition – thanks for your help!
